I have used some rubbing compund on very light rust. But once it starts, I think it will keep coming back. Chrome shop.

might try some Purple Power De-Ruster at advance auto. $7 for about a quart. Converts rust.

I doubt that any thnig actually CONVERTS RUST to anything other than rust. You cant take rust( oxidation molecules and change them) What it actually does is seal the metal and in theory not allowing it to return.
A fine wire brush with lube( WD-40) will work to remove small rust but you will have to wax teh area to block the moisture from oxidixing the metal.
The ting with large rust is that it lift the paint or plating off of the surface allowing moisture to be trapped in spots you cant see.

Nvr dull has helped me with small ammounts of rust and leaves a wax residue that slows the rusting but does not abbolish it entirely. best cure is Preventive maintanace

I had some rust on my pipes and on chrome bar around saddle bags and behind light bars. my brother found a product called Mr. buffer put some on a very fine steel wool lightly buffed on rust an wawla it was gone. it leaves a protective film. its the best metal polish i've ever used. Great for all kinds of metals.

Lots of rust? Not sure.

I had rust on my mufflers and some around my rack on the trunk. Used aluminum foil crumpled up and rubbed them down. Cleaned it up nicely.

I usually only get rid of the red oxidation stain. Dependent on the severity it will improve the finish enough to to put off replacement. Also dependent on the severity is what I use on it. If it is a lost cause right off the bat I'll start steel wool. If it is very minor I can usually work the stain with chrome polish. It especially helps if you don't have that under 40 year old and vision (i.e. 20/20).

A good Chrome polish and 0000 steel wool will clean up chrome fast and easy. The steel wool will not harm the chrome.The bestinexpensive method I have found.

I totally agree with the aluminum foil crumple. Was shown that years ago and was amazed with results. Price is right also.

I have used CLR. On small items, but it destroys rust so you have to make sure it is only surface rust or it may desolve, like an acid.

Hey thx y'all for taking the time to offer suggestions. I've gotten to be pretty well acquainted with the nature of rust over the years/projects. There is a lot of surface rust on the chrome but none of it is close to structural. I read about CLR but haven't used it. Seems like an all purpose product. I'll look for some Purple Power. Gotta get the crummy stuff off and then break out the polish.
