I usually only get rid of the red oxidation stain. Dependent on the severity it will improve the finish enough to to put off replacement. Also dependent on the severity is what I use on it. If it is a lost cause right off the bat I'll start steel wool. If it is very minor I can usually work the stain with chrome polish. It especially helps if you don't have that under 40 year old and vision (i.e. 20/20). ;)
