Hobie, AGM batteries are very susceptible to incorrect trickle charging. They are easily over charged if the wrong unit is used. The only way you would know for sure is to call or write the Schumacher Battery Companion company.

The good news is: most AGM batteries can go all winter without loosing any (or very little)charge (one of their strong points).. I use AGM batteries in all my equipment & motorcycles& never charge them during storage. Most will come out of a 3-4 month storage at 12.6+ volts if disconnected for the storage period.

I checked it out after reading the posts. So it looks like a glass mat battery is only really worth considering if its a gel type and not lead acid.
FitzAl, why do you say that? I'm interested in why you would personally choose a gel over an AGM?

Gel's have certain advantages & AGM's have other advantages. Both types have acid in them. The gel's can be mounted upside down if needed so they have the advantage there. The AGM's are a little more vibration resistant so they have the advantage there. One big advantage to the AGM (at least in my book) is their voltage retention during prolonged storage, hands down they loose less charge than a gel in extended storage.
