I keep mine on the side stand most of the time. Can't see what it would hurt it doesn't smoke anyway. I don't think that was as common with the 6 cylinder bikes. Even if it smoked, I'd still park it that way, I'm convinced it's a lot more secure.

Draw a line through all three points the bike is supported on while on the center stand and then again on the sidestand. Which gives the triangle with the widest base and maximum height? The largest base resists tipping the most.

On thing to consider about a longer side stand is that you are putting more leverage on the mounting bracket, there's an increased possibility of it bending. If you need and extension to clear the floor board there are bolt on extensions, look like narrow inverted Vs that attach to the existing stand leg, which stick out at 90 degrees to the folded stand and clear the floorboard enough to get a foot on.
