Single carb kit for GL1200

Hi,

Have just received my order:

A carb kit for GL1200 based on VW Beetle single carb. Going to replace my stock carbs and tune a new one this weekend. If everything is ok (and I'm more than sure everything will be ok:)) I will write a step-by-step report. Maybe this information will be useful for anybody here.

From Russia with love!:)

Ok so the whole story:) Today I've finished the installation of a new single carb kit.

Here are some pix and description:

1. The manifold

2. Stock carbs' removing

3. Stock carbs' removing

4. Lots of free space:)

5. New manifold installation

6. I had to drill a hole for a throttle cable in order to connect it to a new carb. The hole is covered by rubber o-ring to protect the cable.

7. New carb installation. Do not forget to connect 2 positive 12V wires from a coil to carb connectors and 1 negative wire.

8. New air-filter installation.

9. Stock fuse box installation.

10. Finished:)

Very nice job, Sergey. Pictures are great.

So how does it run? And I'll be interested to know what kind of gas mileage you get. Hope you will keep us posted.
I have a single carb setup on a 81 1100and love it. Starts easy, runs great and easy to adjust(2 screws)

Thanks! Pix are made by stock iPhone:))))). I run 40 miles only after that procedure and its to early to say about mpg. I would like to run at least 150-200 miles in different modes (highway&city) to be sure about mpg. I will report for sure in a couple of days. Basically I had no problem with stock carbs and this swapping was a kind of experiment just to feel and find the difference between stock and custom. But I can say for sure that tuning of one VW carb is 100 times easier than OEM Honda carbs. And there is no sex with synchronization )))))))

Hi Pete,

I've run 210 miles and now can say for sure:

1. My Aspy works smooth, starts from the first press after rather cold night (the kit is equipped with auto choke).
2. She runs 32 mpg.

Thanks, Sergey. That automatic choke must be nice. I realize you have only run a tank or two of gas, so it's probably a little early to judge, but is that 32 mpg better or worse than you got with the 4-carb set-up? Thanks.

Well basically there is no difference (in my own case). With old but rebuilt and synched carbs it was between 30 and 35 mpg. But you're 100% right - it's too early to compare:)

Uh....kinda scared to ask for a clarification. I hope it's a 'lost in translation' thing but if it's true, you may have the best reason of all to go with a single carb conversion.
No sex good?
Great to hear that you are happy with your conversion:):claps:
carb set up

SO were did you get the hole set up and what is the cost.

Yep! That means that single carb keeps you safe from group sexual relations with stock 4 carbs set:D

I got it from California. Rather famous person named Juan Fernandez. The total cost (manifold+new 34PICT/3 carb+air filter) was $527
...free shipping from Cali to Moscow?
...that is a good deal.

Shipping was not free and costed extra. But I could choose from USPS First Class, Priority Mail, USPS Express or FedEx.
.

Good post with photos worth lots of words. I sure looks like a nice clean installation.

Thank You.

Thanks Hodgy!

Honestly speaking I also swapped stock coils&wires for modern new. This set is being manufactured in California too.

Getting ready to do the same on my 1200. Sergey, I am curious to know what you did with the crankcase breather hose? I wonder if one of the small universal breather filters will work.
Hey Sergey,
Thanks for your great pics and Video. I just finished up my conversion. Here is the link to my Video. I mention your name a few times. Thanks for the inspiration. "Good Morning Moscow" Let me know what you think. Ride safe.......John Atlanta, Georgia USA
