Sloppy Gearbox

Is this typical of GL1100 gearboxes, or should I be prepared for a trip to the shop?

Every once and a while (esp heavy exceleration) I get a neutral gear instead of 4th when up-shifting. Otherwise, the gearbox is good and strong.

Any thoughts?

And have a great Independence Day week-end, everyone!

I don't think it's a common thing, but I have heard of this once or twice and as far as I know they didn't get any worse because of it.

It's just a sign of old-age hossners, rather than one of impending doom! Enjoy your weekend. :waving:

I don't recall ever getting a wrong place neurtral while up shifting, but many times when down shifting. In my case I think it has to do with the way I use the heel/toe shifter. I'm trying to be more careful.

Hope you don't shoot up past the redline when you miss fourth. Sounds like the shift linkage is getting a bit tired. Maybe worn forks.

I'd put my money on bent or worn shift fork, as exavidhas said.

It sounds like you're already passed the point of damage to the engagement dogs (ears) on the gear itself, so be preparred to replace both the shift fork and gear. If the gear is unavailable you may be able to undercut the engagement faces yourself, don't get it to hot while grinding or you'll need to re-heat treat the gear.

Is this something that just started or has it always been that way? I know on mine, if I don't shift hard enough between gears, and during heavy accelleration it will pop out of that gear and go between gears, kinda like neutral. You have to shift it like 'ya mean it sometimes.

It's showing a little wear that's all. Could stay that way for another 100,000 miles. I'dguess the fork ends are getting a bit worn and sometimes the gears just don't quite go far enough to engage fully unless you shift hard enough so the momentum of the gear carries it through.

hossners, I really don't think it's typical of the GL 1100, I believe it's more typical of all the older Wings with some miles on them. Just about every older Wing I have ridden exhibits that 4th gear miscue if shifted under power, at high RPM's, &in a hurry.

My 1200 was real bad until I learned to shift it correctly.

I have found (through a previous post on the subject on this site) that if you preload the shift lever (in the shifting direction) with your foot just before de-clutching it will then shift smooth as butter. That also works for all shifts & gear ranges. Since the preload learning curve, I haven't missed or ground a shift on my 1200.

I have also found that using a good PAO based synthetic 15W50 oil improves the shift feel & makes shifting noticeably smoother.

ditto what everyone esle says, my 1000 will sometimes (rarely) find an "in-between" spot if I am sloppy on shifting

Preloading the shifter like you were going to shift without the clutch will make is shift smoother, also make sure you lift the lever firmly enough to complete the shift, sometimes if you don't lift it all the way you'll get halfway in gear and it will kick out the first time you vary the throttle.

Mine sometimes does it too... just have to be a bit more assertive with my shifts.

80000 miles and shifts like new, no slack or false shifts?!:baffled:

Great.

I read about this, having it happen to me previously, and what happens today?!!

Neutral in between 4-5. Didn't pull up as hard as necessary.

I do think it's a lack of following through orjust pulling up as firmly as required.

Beautiful day though; 75 deg. nice puffy clouds, cold beverages when needed and now I'm back in the "barn" cuz I haf to go to a wedding reception for someone I don't even know:crying::crying::crying::baffled::baffled:

Regards,

hobie
