I started my bike this morning (after not riding for 3 days) and a thick puff of smoke came out of the back. I have a 1984 GL 1200 any Ideas?

white smoke?

Smoke is normal with a flat engine because it's easier for the engine oil to find it's way past the rings into the combustion chamber. Parking it on the center stand will reduce this as well as holding the bike vertical for 30 seconds after shut down to allow the oil to come to rest in the belly of the engine, then putting it on the side stand.

Check to make sure it is not over full as well.

How many miles on it? Another pet peeve is where the oil seals on the valves start to harden and oil will seep into the cylinders over night. And in the morning at first start up give a good smoke for a few seconds.
