Smokin Interstate

Hi all . I have a beautiful 83 Interstate. I have recently purchased from a friend. I have known the owners since it was new. Proble. When bike is on side stand for awhile it smokes when started. However, the oil does not go down. Doesn't really smell like a rich gas smell, more like oil. Could a carb be leaking into a cyclinderwhen on this angle? Any help is appreciated.

Best regards from Melfort Canada

From what I have read on this site when on side stand this is pretty normal if the smoking stops after a while. But if you post this on the technical forum you should get a more definitive answer.

When you park your wing with the side stand, You have 2 cylinders down stream from your engine oil. the oil gets past the piston rings & when you re start it will smoke while the oil burns off. This is normal with a flat engine. You can park it on the center stand to avoid this or when you shut off your bike, Keep it upright for around 30 seconds to allow the engine oil to settle into the crank case. This will lessen the smoky start up!

How old are your timing belts????

With my 83 if I parked it with a 3/4 inch (19mm) piece of wood under the side stand it would not smoke.

Welcome from North Carolina Anybox! Like the others say, this is normal and not to worry unless it smokes for a long time. These tend to smoke for a few minutes after being on the side stand for a while. I use my centerstand as much as possible but my 1100 was a heck of a lot harder to get up than my 1200 is, I guess due to the position of the stand. Enjoy your new ride!

It depends where the engine is at rest when leaned over. There are times enough oil will drain into combustion chamber and smoke at startup. As long as it clears up there's nothing to worry about. These bikes aren't oil burners. A normal 1100 should run a long time without ever needing a top off.

Hey All. Problem solved!
You all were right about the side stand and oil smoke when start up. I put a small shim under the side stand and now no smoke! Timing belts not old , However, will change in the fall. Best regards to you all!
