smoking a little

Got the carbs done and fired up my 83 1100 interstate, sounds strong and when I ran it around the block and it ran strong. It sat for a long time, but the oil looked good when I changed it. It smoked pretty bad at first and then got better, but after an hour of running it still is putting out some. If it's valve seals can you change them without pulling the heads by using air in the piston, like on a car. Thanks Dana

I would try to get some miles on it before tearing into it anymore. at least a hundred miles then if the issue still exists tear it apart. Yes I have been told you can use air or a coil of rope fed into the cylinders to do the stem seals.

Dana,

If it's sat a while put some seafoam through it, not for the carbs but to lube the top end of the engine. Put some in the oil and change oil and filter after 200 miles, it cleared all my smoking after that, Worth a try.

And if you do use rope. Make sure it is a soft flexible rope. and a smaller diameter than the plug hole.

I remember a friend used rope he cut from his kids sled. The yellow plastic rope and then had it stuck in the cylinder before he called me. I told him to keep rotating it and tugging and I was coming over.

Well before I got there he got frustrated and used a tool and broke the rope inside the block.

After removing the head, I found the rope had a knot in it. I asked how the hell you got it through the plug hole. He said he poked it in with a screw driver and it worked on the cylinder before this one and he had no problem.

I told him that I was glad he had no Kids and Here's your Sign.

You just know that life is MUCH HARDER for Stupid People. Grin

Good Luck

I figured that I would give it some time before I worried to much. It ran strong when I ran it around the block and it starts first time over, so i don't think it's a broke ring or anything major. The rope thing was wild, I use one to pull the clutch on a chainsaw but never thought of it for valves. Thanks guys. Dana
