Solomon's Castle

About 30 mins south of my house is a little town called Ona, Florida. That town has a cheesy tourist spot called Solomon's Castle. Apparently, some eccentric guy started modifying/adding on to his house and, over the years has turned it into a an aluminum clad medieval castle. Anyway, the place has a pretty decent restaurant and, since it is sunny and 63* here in Central Florida, we decided to head down there for lunch. Pulled up in the parking lot and spotted two Victory Visions. I've never seen two at one place so began talking to one of the riders. Wasn't disrespectful or condescending, just curious. As I was speaking with one, heard the other say to his friend that he would not drive a Harley 'cause parts fall off. I was shocked as things had been friendly till then. Anyway, I pointed that Harley owners "ride" their scoots and the parts that fall off are what were used to build a Victory. All three looked shocked and, as I was walking away, I heard the big mouth getting razzed by his buds. Turned out to be a good lunch.

Of interest to you wingers, I also saw a black Goldwing, not sure of year but it was fairly new as it had ABS. I don't normally find Goldwing's attractive as I prefer the more "classic" look, but...this bike really looked good. Had the right combination of chrome and black paint and the guy didn't go overboard with add ons..that was one Goldwing I would have ridden. Oddly enough, he and I talked without any tension or motorcycle envy. :)

If you dont normally find Goldwings attractive then why did you join a Goldwing forum. I don't mean to be rude just curious as to your reasons.

Bob,just because I don't like the aesthetics of a Goldwing doesn't mean I can't appreciate them for what they are..mechanically sound, fast motorcycles that have proven themselves over the years. You see, I like all types of motorcycles (secretly want a Ural but don't tell anyone)and appreciate the variety out there. There's no denying people like the GW as they are a lot out there, I don't think they are ugly just not my style. I just prefer the more classic style of bike..hence the Harley. Why I joined well...curiosity I guess and a desire to know as much about other motorcycles that I can. Been a member here for awhile but mostly lurk as I don't post too often. Hope this clears things up a little. Ride safe.

Well mavagrand, I guess you have already found out that the only thing important on this forum is that you enjoy riding in the wind.

And, that you don't outright bad mouth a HD tooooo badly :cheeky1:

Welcome and do join in the fun.

mavagrand... great post.

I am a Ural/Dnepr fan myself.
A 2WD hack that goes anywhere? Oh Yeah.
I have visions of converting the final drive on my 1000 to that of a Ural/Dnepr.. / ...long story.

I've seen a few of those Visions, and I just can't get past the weirdness. Not being a V-twin fan, I would never consider one anyways - but they appear to have been styled more to shock than to fulfill any kind of purpose. From what I understand, they are mechanically well thought-out, for what they are. The only plus I see to the bizarro look - is possibly better cold-weather wind protection for the hands.

For some reason, it seems like BMWis the only marque that can consistently get away with "odd" styling. It is expected from them, and they do it well. :)

Redeye, my brother owns a 2008 GW "Navi" that I rode. It is a well thought out design that rode surprisingly well, even at slow speed. His is pearl white and is pretty, for a GW :) Two observations though, his bike has so many gadgets on board I found it distracting. I suppose one would get used to them but, to this Harley guy, there was too many gauges, dials, switches, toggles and LED screens. Second, (and not meant to insult) I don't like the way the panels wrap around you..I actually like to feel the wind and see the road. Other than that, the bike was great. Fit and finish was almost (LOL) as good as my Harley, plenty of storage and the bike was comfortable. Oh, it was rape ape fast too. Good golly......

Hey Bob, I do see the irony here. A guy that rides a Harley is posting on a Goldwing site about two Victory's that he saw...bwwwaaahhhhhhhhhh.

Mavagrand, we're glad to have you here. Anyone who likes to ride is our type. If I had the $, I'd have a HD, BMW and a 1800 GW, and a KLR just for kicks, like Cousin Jack. I am always glad to have someone else's perspective.

he would be in good company. We have several Ural riders on here.

Henning Bitsch's diesel bike started life out as a Ural before the conversion...

Yes, the Ural is the Russian knock off of the WWII German BMW.
After the war the Russians had the German factory machinery and blue prints and that became the Ural. The Russians also reverse engineered many other things from both Germany and America.
Latter on the Chinese started to make them too under a different name.

The Americans got most of the Rocket production stuff!

Ural's are neat looking and utilitarian, the kind of bike you can ride and put away dirty. I'd like one just for the novelty.

I have a Hardley riding buddy. He calls me the Mattel Rider. :D He looks at me in full gear and wants to know if I need any help getting on the bike, says he can rig up a hoist if need be. ;)

Lots of bikes out there, all unique, all fun, but as for me I have had a lot of them, and nothing, and I mean nothing comes close to the 1800. It is the caddy of the bike world, the perfect touring bike, and no slouch for some play in the twisties too.

As for marketing I have always wondered why Vision did not come out with ABS brakes.
Do wonder about that.

What do you Wingers think about the Vision? Given it's design, would you think about purchasing one instead of a Wing? I believe, due to it's hightech look and numerous panels, the Victory would sooner attract perspective GW buyers than us Harley dudes who prefer the more "classic" ride. What say you?

Don't like the looks of the Vision personally, then again not crazy about the looks of an 1800 either. I like my 1500, looks and ride. If money, or lack of same, wasn't an issue I would love to have an Indian.
The people I ride with ride all makes and models, I appreciate them all except the crotch rockets:action:

This is just my viewpoint, but more than looks is performance. Once your climb on an 1800, get a bit used to it and open the throttle, it has such torque and get up and go, no other bike can even come close.

More than just looks. Big heavy bike like this with this amount of power is not something one would like to trade away.

Maybe new riders would be swayed by looks , but experienced riders look for power, ABS brakes, neat things like on the BMW bikes like electric windshield and center stand.

If Honda would produce an 1800 with an adjustable shield(electric) and a electric center stand to go with all they already have, maybe, maybe a better GPS with an aux port to download things to, they would beat all other bikes, except for those who like the classic style.

I like the big Twins too, nothing beats a lazy day on a thumper down the back roads wit h an old pair of blue jeans an a t shirt and doo rag. Wing in your face and the sound of the engine.

But the 1800 spoiled me for power and comfort for the long haul.

One of the reasons I went with the 1800 was the classic looks. I have always liked the classic art deco from the 20's and 30's. The 1938 BMW R-7 comes to mind. Or the more obscure 1929 Majestic. I do think the headlight design detracts, a bit, from this but clearly the classic lines are still there.

In fact, I was very surprised to see Honda go with this type of design. Of course there are other reasons I went with the GW. But the classic design was, most definitely, one of them.

I would like to have a Vision they are just strange enough looking that not everyone has em :) It took me a while to get used the goofy looking trunk, although they look sweet with out the trunk. Reminds me of all the old hot rods that have been "chopped and lowered".

My ridding buddy rides a Harley. I'm not sure how you can like the sound of a nice rodded V8 and not like the sound of a single pin crank V twin :) All that wind in your face is great till you come up on that rain storm or the temperature takes a nose dive. I keep telling him to get a Ultra Classic but he says he aint old enough yet. That's when I tell him to stop complaining and ride then :)

I can't think of a bike that I wouldn't ride, yea I'm a bike **** :) I just have a hard time with those that think if you aint ridding their brand then you are not a rider.
