Some carb progress

After rebuilding a set of carbs off of an 81 I finally got the bike to start however it only starts and runs when the choke is pulled all the way up. I set the fuel mixture screws 1 1/4 turns out. It also backfires a little when running. I spent a lot of time cleaning these and making sure all of the passages were clear. I set my float levels and replaced all of the seals and rubber pieces. I bought these carbs off of e-bay and they said they were off of an 81. I did notice that the idle mixture screws were almost 3 turns out when I got the carbs. Should I reset them there or should I set them at 1 1/4 turns out? Any help would be great. CJ

I started at 1 1/4 turns also, looked at plugs, waaaaay lean (white). I adjusted them out 1/4 turn at a time and went for my 100 mile commute. next day do it again. I think I'm at about 3 turns now or so, the plugs are brown (good). The book says you are supposed to do an idle drop, I don't have a tach for that.

the 80 though 81 have differnt idle screw settings than the 82 though 83 carbs . the carb # for 80-81 is VB48A . the carb # for 82-83 is VB48C . the # is on the top of the carb that mates to the manifold . hope this is of some help.

I am going to put new plugs in it and run it for a while and then pull the plugs and see if I am running to lean. Hopefully I will be able to get this right soon. I know for sure that the carbs are off of an 81 because the idle jets are pressed in and can not be removed. In 82 and 83 you can remove the idle jets and clean them, in the 81 your screwed. I hope that with a small piece of wire from an old brake cable and some sea foam did the trick and cleaned them out good enough. It would be hard to tell though since the idle jets have so many little holes in them. If I can't get it to run well then I will pull all of the seals and rubber pieces out and try using some strong carb cleaner through the idle jets. I tried to blow some air through them but I don't know where the air comes out. I think the passsage from the idle jet goes to the air cut off valve? But I am not sure maybe someone can help me with that? Thanx CJ

Does any one know where I can get a good carb adjusting tool so I don't have to pull the carbs everytime I want to adjust them? Thanx CJ

Also I found that the best wire for the slow jets is a guitar string B to be exact. Just take caution as many dont like the wire thing. This is steel wire and your jets are brass, Being harder than brass you can scratch and gouge the metal disrupting the flow of fuel.

Hi CJ, When you said the choke has to be pulled out all the way and you have backfiring, this reminded me of my '81 when I first got it. The guy I got it from said the timing belts were new and this, that and the other. He couldn't get the clutch to work and let me have it. Got the clutch but had the sameproblem you had with Idle. Well the timing was so off if punched a hole in my #2 piston. The valve hung and that aluminum piston never had a chance. CHECK your timing marks. You have a serious VACUUM problem. Good Luck

After the rebuild did you synch the carbs? You have 4 separate carbs and they need to be in synch or you will have LOTS of problems.
