The spark units for the GL1100 according to Clymer says to toss them if they do not work. Before throwing them outand spending a few bucks on new ones, I tried the following: Isolate the battery by removing at least the - terminal and isolate that -wire so it does not touch the battery - terminal while you are working on any of the electrics. Then I removedthe spark units and connectorsas I have been doing with every connection on this 1980 unit. I then cleaned the connectors male and female, also clean the area where the bolts will go back to support these square little boxes. Since you're in the area remove the regulator and clean the connector. When reconnecting install the connector and remove 3x this will remove any junk on the contact points, keep the locking mechanism open so it does not lock up as you make and break the connections. On an old bike I have found every connector to be below par. Upon reconnection and start up I could now touch the spark units without excessive heat, they were so hot earlier that that the sealing tar like material was melting. A bigger heat sink looks to be in order in this area.
In this process I came across a rectangular box mounted in a rubber isolator. This is in front of and below the 3 connectors for the 2 spark units. Any idea what it is? In a black plactic with 3 wires in a connector. It is not the signal blinker.
