The week before we had our run to Tahlequah the gas consumption on my 1100 jumped from right at 40 to about 45. I don't know whether it's something I did because my Goldwing is a work in progress (though I don't recall doing anything much) or the gas stations changed to summer gas. I find if I can cruise around the backroads and keep it under 4K rpm it'll stay at about 45 even two up. Hit the super slab and the associated speeds and it plummets to about 37 mpg.
