Got a glitch in my newly revived old girl. The flat tab that joins the speedo drive unit to the speedo cable down on the wheel has broken. I can't tell from the diagrams on the parts fiche or from the clymer manual if this is a replaceable part, nor how to replace if so. Any one out there have some answers for me? Parts even?
Thanks

Hey wildcat look on page 39 on the word parts cd I gave you It is the end of inner part of the speedo cable that broke. Make sure your speedo itself did not lock up before putting in a new one or the same thing will happen

Damned if I can find it, all the files are in adobe pretty much except a few short ones in word. I have the GL1200 Parts Catalouge, All but page 39 on that is armrests and trunk stuff. Checked both shop manuals, Clymer and Honda but no luck there either :gunhead:

And yup first thing I did was check the speedo, its working fine, no lock up or resistence even when I turn the cable. got ya covered there :D

Sorry about that wrong page its on page 308 or 310 I can't remember what year yours is

The above link does not show it. I'm not sure you can just buy the inner cable try one of the ebay stores

The milage recorder on my 86 Gl1200a has stopped recording. If it turns out to be a broken speedo cable, can it be replaced without taking the dash apart?

If you are just replacing the inner cable then yes, you should be able to disconnect it from the bottom on the wheel, slide out the inner, slide in a new one and away ya go. But if your mileage recorder has stopped but speedometer still works then you have bigger troubles, its only speedo cable or drive unit when both stop working.

It's a digital read out for the speed but mechanical milage recorder. I was thinking that the speedometer was get a electical signal from some where on the engine.

Ahh being a poor interstate owner I forgot about that. The speed sensor is down on the front axle, drive unit drives an electronic sensor for the speed. Near as I can figure from the manuals your odometer does not have a cable from the wheel. It is driven electronically. so no speedo cable to change on your bike:baffled:

Everything is working except the mileage recorder in the lower left had side of the display. The trip meter and speedo are digital but I believe the recorder is mechanical. I could be wrong on that. I'm going to pull my rotor covers off today and see if there's a cable running down to the front wheel.

Thanks. I'd like to get it working but am not looking forward to pulling everything apart to get to it. I'm gonna put on a new windshield next week. Guess that's the time to do it.
