Speedo problem

Hi all,

I have a 1983 GL1100. I think its just a standard model, it doesn't have the digital dash so I know it isn't the Aspencande. Anyway, the speedo has stopped working.

I ordered a new speedo cable and then identified the Speedo Drive to be at fault. I ordered one from e-bay but it looks completley different. I have nowhere on the speedo drive to screw in the speedo cable. I have checked an English site www.davidsilverspares.co.uk and it looks exactly like the one I purchased!

Does anyone know the part number, or am I missing something?

Looks like I have found the issue.

The previous owner installed a Speedo drive from a 1200. The images are identical to what I have installed.

Likely what happened is you bought a '80 to '82 speedo drive and tried to install on your '83. They don't match. The '83 drive looks identical to the GL1200 Interstate, so that's where the confusion is. The PO more than likely did not change it out, it was an '83 drive all along.

Ok, that makes sense.

I guess what was confusing me was the speedo cable. I bought a new cable which was supposed to work with an 80 to 83!

Is the drive from a GL1200 compatible with a GL1100 83 then?

Several sites I went to shows a different cable for '80 to '82 than the '83 and the GL1200 Interstate models. The end that goes down at the hub is totally different. Take a look at pictures of both.

I can't say ALL GL1200 drives are compatible (certainly none of the Aspencade ones), but '84 should be. They look identical, and use the same TRAC front end, cable, etc...

Great. I can get hold of one of those.

What site do you use Sam? I only ask as I couldn't seem to find an 83 speedo drive anywhere!

I use ebay mostly for finding odd stuff. You have to be creative in your search methods. 3 or 4 GL1200 speedo drives just ended in the past few weeks. I can't find any up for sale right at the moment. Found one earlier, but can't find it now.
