Speedometer Problem 1984 GL1200A

Yesterday I was out riding and my speedometer reading started going haywire - I was cruising at about 50mph, but the speedometer read 15, 30, 20, (no pattern, but just a series of different and wrong numbers). Then, the speedometer read ZERO, the odometer stopped working and the turn signals stopped auto-cancelling (although they work fine otherwise).

I believe all of the above points to a faulty speed sensor. I will verify with a meter later in the week when I get home.

AmI "on target" or is there something elseI should consider (and test) given the above symptoms?

Thanks,

Pat

Take the sensor loose (1 screw) from the wheel hub and spin the wheel. See if you can see the tang turning where the sensor mounts. First and foremost.

To me sounds likely that the speedometer cable has broken.

I was under the impression the 84 GL1200A uses an electronic sensor which eliminates the need for a speedo cable.

sure sounds like a cable or the gear in the front wheel

nope 84 is mechanical cable in the front wheel

If it's the Aspencade like in the title, there will be no cable, only a sensor and wire. Only the Interstate and Standard of the '84 have a cable.

Small point...

:doh:OOOps, recon you folks are right. Been awhile since my son had his 1984 GL 1200 and it was an interstate.
