I just received my spot bill for around $175 which I managed to negotiate down to around $125.
Even so it is very expensive for a month or so I use it yearly.

Im following Rednaxs60 in the way to Alaska and it would be nice to know his location and see the distance travelled every day. It would also help him in case he is out of cell range and needs help.
Hereby I propose to have a rental program in which everyone chips in a small amount and the unit will be available to all on first ask bases.
If more then a person wants it at the time a decision could be made based on it based on distance, road loneliness, time away from home .
My unit is too limited and does not allow sending msg . We could purchase a better one.
Even if you never use it whats something $10/ year when you could help and track a fellow rider.( also a small fee could be set for those who use it for the duration of the trip)
Are you in?
Rednax could have donated towards this program instead of the casino.

That is expensive considering how little you use it. I think I would carry it on my person all the time just to be using it. Too bad they don't just charge you for the air time you use.

my renewal is coming up in a week,
it is time that I call them and get that down in price, it is almost $200 on automatic renewal which is for crap

and the one Rednax60 is using has messaging capability if he needs it.

I think your sharing idea makes a lot of sense.

My new one is on a month-to-month plan, $15 a month or something like that, and AFAIK I can cancel it when I'm not riding and re-enable it when I am.

How long before the transceiver follows all the tools in the "Tool Loaner Program" into never never land?

Speaking of the Tool Loaner Program there are some odd going ons there.
All example threads linked to in The main Tool Loaner page. have disappeared as have threads in the last year where the Toolmaster was quoted or he quoted someone.

Apologies, mine is the Garmin InReach - I chose it because it had the month-to-month plan and it pairs with my phone.

It does 2-way texting, but I use my phone for that. It also has the location tracking, but I use my phone and SpotWalla for that as well. Even though it has full-service plans, I carry it only for the SOS button or for tracking outside of cellular service. Otherwise, it stays in my jacket pocket and doesn't send or receive anything.

That pairing with a phone could quite valuable in areas of the world where there are NO cell towers available for the user. e.g. those with Verizon can't roam onto a non CDMA carrier period.

We have a couple of folks touring Alaska this summer, and the InReach would be a better choice than SPOT if you require daily communications to the world or home.

Using the Delorme inReach Explorer. Think I'm doing pretty good being a journalist for our trip. Add the finer points next trip. In William's Lake for the night, should be home tomorrow.

Cheers

are you using it for accessing our forum and making posts?
Figured that would only be when you find a WiFi point.

Using it to send the preset messages to family, and just in case for an emergency. Only used the email once because of no WIFI or cell coverage where we stayed for the night. Only subscribed to the "safety" annual plan that gives me 10 emails a month. Do the daily thoughts off line and catch up when I can.

On my next trip going to do the log tracking and upload the daily drive to mapshare and post address here for comments.

Cheers
