I'm going to replace the original brake lines on my '91 Goldwing. The first decision might be to decide whether or not to replace the short little hose under the tank. The website I've been looking at says it is not necessary and sells it separately. I've never seen this hose and I don't know where it fits in the system. I'm interested to know if others of you have replaced this little hose or not.

I might be wrong, but I did NOT change that hose. If its the one I'm thinking of, it goes from the rear master cylinder to the front brake line, , but the SS brake lines that I put in only went from the front caliper to the "connector" end of that hose. It wouldn't reach the master cylinder so I took that as a "sign-from-God" to leave it alone.

Could that short hose have a "shell" (plastic) covering it to protect it and keep it from rubbing on the tank and/or frame? I don't think that short hose came in the "kit" I got either, , ,I don't have any SS hoses left over, , , and I'm sure I didn't change the short one.

The short hose I recall is mounted just about centerline of the bike . It attaches to the frame just above the front of the swingarm and makes a 90* turn to mouint on the left front of the swingarm. It is about 5" long. Memory tells me it was a bit aggravating to install.
But consider this .... unless you replace all the lines the system is no better than the weakest part. One soft expanding hose still leaves you with a place for the pressure to expand and not exert force on the calipers.

short hose

I've got the 3-hose set, the short hose and the clutch hose in my wish list on the randakk cycle shakk website. I just need to move them to my cart and make it happen.

Is it really important to prefill the hoses before installation? Is there a trick to that?

The rear braded hose that I got eliminated that short hose. Mine goes directly from the master cylinder to the rear caliper.

I did not pre fill my hoses. I use a vac when I change fluid. I just used that and it sucked all the air out of the line.

I've done this on 2 GL1500's so far, and developed a kit with "Techna-Fit" because I could not find one of that design elsewhere:

With the new lines I only need to bleed the brakes every 2yrs... rather than every couple months previously; I presume the stock lines bleed air through the multiple fittings.

Alex, the accounts manager from Techna-Fit replied that they could not find what they made for you and asked me to send him the old lines so they can copy them. I would rather have the new lines in hand before I begin the project. So I appreciate your help and I may take you up on the rear hose. Are you saying that you have one hose that goes from the RMC to the rear caliper. And that it replaces the two OEM hoses and the OEm pipe that goes between them?

I've been reading old threads on this forum and studying the parts fisch. I certainly intend to replace all the rubber hoses. I am starting to understand that a popular method is to replace the hose-pipe-hose between the RMC and the rear caliper with one hose. This seems to make good sense. Why not replace the entire assembly from the RMC to the front caliper with one hose?


When I bleed the new hoses do I need a "mitey-vac" or something similar or can I use the Harbor Freight manual vacuum pump? Prefilling the hoses seems like it would make a mess. I'm not afraid of messes, but I try to avoid brake fluid messes and it seems like a vacuum should pull all the air out regardless of how much there is.

Vacuum or pressure bleeding works fine with empty lines. Even manual bleeding will work, but you might need a lot of patience with that method. As long as HF pump pulls vacuum, it will work. Doesn't take a lot, to get the job done. Be sure to keep brake fluid out of the pump.

job started

I finally got a chance to work on the brake line swap. Got the two front lines done. It wasn't as hard as I thought it might be, but a couple of tasks were a royal PITA! The hardline-to-hose connection for the left caliper was ridiculous! And both the brackets across the front on that line were very frustrating.
Can someone give me a tip on how to access the connection under the tank? Do I need to remove the alternator?

I ran the Clutch Line Outside the frame, as shown:

...and the right (Rear Brake, Front Left Brake) line as shown: (Had to remove the carb, for access)
