Starte/OD switch and harness replacement

I bought a new stater/ overdrive switch set and wiring harness and it looked like a simple replacement. I dug into the bike for 2 hours :shock:and came within 8 inches of the ends of the wiring harness but could get no further without what appears to a total removal of the front of the bike.
Any ideas or experience with this out there?
