I have a '78 and have had the starter not engage (turn over just spin} a few times. I'm hoping it may be 22 year old grease that some starter maintenance may take care of. My '78 Honda Motor Co Inc gl 1000 manual says it may be the AC generator.

Has anyone done any starter rebuilding or maintenance?

It might not be the starter,it could be the dogs [ for lack of a better word) not catchinfg the gear to turn the motor,can happen with the Wong oil

It's not the starter itself, it is the starter clutch on the rotor shaft. Easiest fix is usually to run some seafoam or marvel mystery oil or automatic trans fluid in the engine oil for a couple hours of riding then change the oil, maybe to a lighter weight.

Happens on mine when using 20~50 oil in cooler weather. 10~40 clears it right up.
