Starting Problem

To the right side of my battery on my GL1100 Interstate(1983) there is a plastic compartment housing a coil?/solenoid? and the fuse for the ignition. When I start the bike it often goes click click click and motor won't turn over. When I tap the silver cylinder (whatever part this is???- I claima major lack of mechanical know-how) the bike will then start....if this part needs replacing as it sounds...what part is it? and where can I find one for an old 83 Interstate...tired of worrying about being stranded...battery is new so not a 'juice' problem. When I gap the terminals on this top of the cylinder/coil? the bike starts right up...Not sure if anyone can help here but would sure like some direction as I don't want to be eaten by blackflies out on a ride somewhere and she won't start :gunhead:pls help.

Sounds like your starter solenoid. Mine was like that and I got a new one at the dealer.
