Does anyone know if the starter on an 87 Aspencade can develop a flat spot the reason I ask is my bike has an intermittent problem where it will only click when I hit the starter button,I then put the bike in gear rock it a little in gear and it starts the starter spins like it should after I do that. The starter was rebuilt two summers ago.

Try a dose of seafoam in your crankcase. It sounds like you have too heavy a motor oil or you have develpped some carbon buildup. I seafgoamed mine as per instructions and the oil comes out at 3000 miles almost as clean as day one.

Does this happen when it is hot or only when cold.?

I'm running Bardhall 10w40 used seafoam before last oil change and the problem shows up even when the bike is hot.

Clean up all your connections. Spray some contact cleaner into your start button. Your starter relay might also be gitting pooched. I dont think you have a flat spot because when the starter is not employed, it is not connected mechanically to your engine, so moving your bike should have no bearing on it!

Starting problem contiues cleaned and checked connections cleaned start switch with contact cleaner still only selonoid click however when I tap the starter litely or anywhere near the starter on the engine or frame the starter turns freely bike starts.Could it be the starter even though when it spins it spins freely and fast? Any ideas to help solve this problem before it drives me crazy Thanks.
