I have a 1994 GL 1500 SE. I am having problems in my starting sytsem. When I push the start button, it just dims the lights. No clicking or anything else. But it will start if I jump the relay with a screwdriver. The battery checks out OK too. Relay has already been changed.

Confused.

On my 83 GW I took the starter off because of simular problems that you are having. The inside was a mess. They are not hard to clean, there is a good down load on this siteby magic fingers on how to clean your starter.I'm not saying this is your problem but a good starter cleaning can do no harm. When I got into the gutts of my starter it look like~#!~*x<~

Welcome BD, I believe most on here will suggest you use contact cleaner on the contacts inside the start button before trying anything else.. Enjoy the forum....

Two other possibilities are the neutral switch and the side stand switch.

With my 1500 the headlight goes off during starting,I think there something wrong in handle bar switch, time to test switch's with multi meter or test light. Mel

Thanks, although I have taken the switch apart and cleaned it a few times and finally replaced it with a brand new one.

If the starter/reverse switch checks out good, then I would suspect the starter relay switch A or B. A is the one located by the battery, B is located near the oil filler cap with the "red and blue" rubber caps over the terminal connections.

You can bypass the starter/reverse switch by jumping across the brown/red and yellow/red wires. This will trigger the starter relay switch A. If the relay does not click, I would check the wire connections, if good, then the relay is bad. If the relay A clicks, then I would suspect the relay B or it's connections.

Confused.
if you can jump it from the starter solenoid you need to replace the starter solenoid that is the symptom that says the starter solenoid is bad
This thread (and his trouble) is over 3 years old now. Probably either got it fixed or sold by now. ;)
