Hello all, I'm trying to check the valves on my 78 GL1000 and I can't get the cap off the stator cover so I can spin the motor over by hand, I used a 17mm and a lot of force but I'm afraid I'm going to strip it, I also don't want to use heat because of the rubber seal. Has anyone else had this problem?
They are a fairly inexpensive part for a motorcycle. That same cap is used in various places on many different motorcycles. For instance, it is the same as the cap for the final drive. Here is the fiche for that part. It is item #4 and the o-ring is item #8. The cap is $7.92 and the o-ring is $2.61.
I've rounded off the nut in the past, try using a 6 point wrench on it. you can get some purchase on it from underneath too, or just try tapping it around with a sharp drift.
Not genuine parts, but you can get a new cap with an O ring on eBay for $5.99, free shipping.
Hold socket tight to cap then smack the ratchet handle or breaker bar with a hammer should do it @ shock and awe :<)
