Strange Noise GL1500

I've just recently begun hearing a strange noise coming from underneath the front area of the fairing on my '98 GL1500SE but only while it is rolling. It sounds rather like an electric fan motor seizing but I would have thought it would show symptoms while stopped as well as while rolling. It comes and goes but typically manifests itself when hitting a rough bit of pavement such as a seam or a pothole. Any ideas?

This seems to come about every year when the cold starts. The first area I would look is the location where the speedo cable enters the the gear assembly on the front wheel. If I remember, a phillips head screw removes the cable. Spray some light oil inside the area of the gears.

My bike had similar issues last year and sounded like a radiator fan freezing up. Seems like the gears get a little dry and start to howl. Some one else may have some other things to check, but I would start with this first.

Thanks for the tip. In fact, it was the first cool day of riding this year when it first occured. BTW, I hail from that neck of the woods, originally. Thompson, GA

Yup...speedo cable. Just lube it, you'll be ok.

Speedo cable just replaced last season but greased the gear unit at the wheel and nothing more to date.
