Hey Y'all

I know this is going to sound like a boneheaded question, but I managed to strip the head of the bolt on the oil filter and I was wondering if perhaps this is a reverse-threaded bolt (loosen clockwise instead of counter-clockwise)? Also, if anybody has any tips on what I should do now, I would greatly appreciate it. I have put penetrating oil on it to no availsince I am afraid the bolt is siezed a few inches away inside of the filter housing into the engine. For now I have just drained the oil as best I could from the drain plug and refilled the bike with oil.... just don't want to run too long on an old filter.

In the past month I have pulled the fairings and bags and straightened their mounts; pulled, flushed, and refilled the radiator; replaced the water pump; replaced the timing belts; cleaned the carbs and replaced all filters (except the oil, of course); replaced the brakes and repaired the rear master cylinder; replaced the mirrors and handgrips; replaced the tires with some Elite IIIs (love em!); reconditioned the final drive; replaced the headlight assembly; and last, but not least: cleaned, polished, buffed, cursed, and pondered just about every exterior surface on the bike.... yes, I have no life. ;)...and boy, are my hands tired.

Trying tp picture what you mean, if it's what I think it is you should be able to clamp a "Vise Grips" on it extreemly tight andtap the vise grip with a hammer to back it out, don't hit the fins!

Sterling, take heart in the knowledge that these bolts are made of chocolate on the GL1200 as well. You can buy an aftermarket bolt with a 17mm head that will last forever. I got one when I wrecked the bolt on my GL1100 years ago (can't remember where, maybe someone will help out here). The bolt is not reverse-threaded.

the bolt is NOT reverse threaded... and yes, get an aftermarket 17mm head blt I think JCWhitney has them

Thanks guys,

I will see if I can find one of those 17mm head bolts.

Thanks for the tip. I already ordered the $30 replacement bolt and my cover is in good shape, so I'm just going to keep what I got for now.

Where did you order the "Bolt' from?

I ordered a chrome plated oil filter bolt from J.C. Whitney for my 83 GL1100 and when it come in it was cadium plated not chrome plated. I called and they checked and found they did not have or would have a chrome oil filter bolt. They offered a refund but I just had the head plated and installed. That was months age and they still advertise it as chrome:stumped:

I ordered it from Sabrecycle as mentioned above.

HI soulville don't know if you got the old one out yet, but, I found that sears sells some really good stripped nut removal sockets. They have a reverse swirl pattern inside the socket and the socket is open on both sides so you can use a box end spanner (for all the Brits in the crowd) on it if its a deep bolt.

Being new to the group I have the same issue you had a stripped bolt. I heard about an adapter plate but starting here I emailed the person in a few posts down from your original one. I also found a web site, machinemagic1.com/index.htm they have the products but no pricing on the web. Several styles and quite nice looking I might add. jsut thought I would let you know if you were still interested in this route.

I had the same problem the bolt is right hand thread but the factory bolthead is one of the softest metals known to man. I finally got mine off with a pipewrench after finding a larger headed one on ebay. It was inexpensive, larger headed and I've had no trouble since.good luck

I think everyone has had this problem. I believe it is a 13mm bolt. I took a hammer and pounded a 6 point (make sure you use a 6 point, not a 12 or that will strip also) socket on it.
Silly part was I did not have a replacement bolt, so I just put it back on and could not get the socket off. I drove around with that socket attached for quite awhile. I did get a few comments from my friends. Bolt is ruined anyway, not going to hurt beating a smaller socket on it. Make sure you do not hit it so hard you crack the case, some small heavy taps did it for me.

Hi, I had this problem on my 81' and took a large nut that fit over the bolt head and Mig welded them together, with the heat of the weld, it made the bolt easer to get off and Iwas still abel to use the same setup untill I got a new one.

Hi all, I spoke to the guy at Machine Magic today and he is a small machine shop in VA. Nice looking stuff and a decent person to speak to. I am sending him the $65(shipping included) for a new spin on adapter thats polished, $5 less for machine finish. He recommends the Honda filter only and puts that on the adapter plate. I'll let you all know when I get mine how it fits.
