Zonk, 900 will work but that is a little on the low side. 1000 RPM's is about correct but that doesn't allow the charging system to keep even with all the brake lights on. On my personal 1200 I set the idle speed to 1040 cool & that leaves it at about 1060 when fully warm after an hour or so of riding, that allows the charging system to at least add something at idle.

Zonk, the manual for the 85 1200 says 1000 rpm + - 100. I am like twisty and have mine set around 1060 to 1080. It seems to like it at that idle speed.

Mine was at 960 but I recently turned it up to 1060 and it seems to do a little better. This is still within range of what the book calls for either way.

I set mine the same as Twisty and Jim. Works well and means the battery is charging even at idle.
