Can anyone tell me where the Tail/Brake light sensor is at on the 84 Aspencade?
The Taillight/idiot light periodically flashes on the dash and the brown/blue stripe wire and the tail fuse are getting hot. (Which is causing the fuse box to get hot)
I am trying to trace down all connections to make sure they are clean and good without stripping the whole bike apart.

The sensor is just above the starter relay I think but you probably have an overload or short in the tail light circuit, not a problem with the sensor or connectors. Does it have any extra lights added?

Thanks Dave, Yes, I have the added light bars that run around the trunk as well as the lower one that runs around the saddle bags.
You can see a side shot of them in my profile picture.
I had to pull off it for a little while and as soon as it cools down some will get back to it. My plan at this point as soon as the sun is not so bright and can see better start on the rear end checking all the connections and see which light goes out when the dash light comes on.

Thanks, checked all of those and all is good. I spent the day yesterday on the top added on light bar around the trunk. When I started moving the wires to those lights the lights would go off. It never triggered the dash taillight "idiot" light to come on but they needed attention. As I got into them the PO used bullet crimp bullet connectors on them and they were falling apart. I spent the day cleaning and soldering connections.
Just checked all the connections above the headlight and all are in good shape.

While all my tail lights are now stable I just caught the fuse box lid shows "Tail/Meter"
My dash is dim so I am headed that direction now as soon as I figure out where the ground is for the dash.
"I Love chasing electrical". Said no one in their right mind.

OH Well, Connections are long overdue for maintenance anyway.

I have a colored one but I cannot determine the wiring colors.

Which side of the fuse box should be hot?

This is what is reading on the fuse box
With Key On No fuses in fuse box I am reading:
AUX 10 AMP L/S 0, R/S 12.17
Fuse 1, 15 AMP L/S 0, R/S 12.17
Fuse 2, 15 AMP L/S 12.18, R/S 0
Fuse 3, 15 AMP L/S 12.18, R/S 0
Fuse 4, 15 AMP R/S 12.18, L/S 0

I then checked the harness plug and have the below results
Top Row starting Left to Right
Light Green Wire/Black Stripe 12.27
Black Wire 12.27
Brown Wire/Black Stripe 0
Green Wire 0


Bottom Row Left to Right
Black Wire/ Red Stripe 0
Brown Wire/Blue Stripe 0
White Wire/Green Stripe 0
Blank

Thanks Dennis, I will have to get my wife to see if she can make out the color codes.
I can see about half of them and the rest get to blurry when I blow it up.

Your voltage readings are correct except the 3 fuses that show power on 1 side but not the other, those fuses are probably blow.

Those readings were taken with the fuses out and key on Dave, I was attempting to show the power feed is from the R/S on 2 terminals and the L/S on the other 3 terminals.
If I put the fuses back in I get power both sides of the fuse.

The power should only feed completely from one side or the other all the way down.
Not two from one side and the other 3 the other side.

What really does not make sense is I have had this bike for 6-7 years now and traveled all over the place on it and never had any problems.
I cannot understand why this is just coming up now.

No, it is as it should be. Don't understand why you are messing with the fuse box when the problem is elsewhere.

After I fixed the light bar ground everything was still leading me back to the connections at the fuse box.
When I moved the box the dash would go out.
Turned out the solid Green wire had a break in the wire at the plug.
Everything seems to be stable now as far as any shorts as well as the fuse box and tail wire are now only slightly warm and not hot as it was before.
The PO tied in all the lights on the light bars, the mud flap and around the tag to the taillight circuit under the seat.
There are 9 lights on the light bars alone with 3 #10 bulbs per light.
My next step is to isolate those lights off the tail circuit as I think it is just overloading the small OE taillight circuit/wire.
