Temperature gauge problem, GL1100

The temperature gauge on my 82 gl1100A has quit working. Worked before I pulled the thermostat to test it. I can't say it failed right after I put the cooling system back together but it doesn't work now for sure. Temp. sending unit perhaps? Got continuity between the sending unit and the gauge. Any quicky troubleshooting ideas?

Touch the wire to ground with the ignition on, the gauge should swing up.
If it does then the sending unit is suspect.
If it does not then there's a wiring or gauge problem.

I'm assuming you mean the wire that runs from the sending unit to the Gauge?

After looking at the wiring diagram what you propose is a nice dirty little test! Ground it out, bypassing the sending unit altogether!
