Terrible Brake squealing noise....

Any ideas on what it may be and how to stop it....

When Isqueezethe front brake lever it goes away, and sometimes if I "tap" it a few times it stops as well.

Also, the noise is more pronounced when taking left hand turns. It happens at all speeds, but when going slow it is louder of course.

Thanks!

Assuming the brake pads are in good shape, pull them off, coat the back in anti-squeal compound, and reinstall. Should solve your problem.

Thanks GSmacLean.... I looked at the site in your sig, and saw the process for replacing pads. The years though in that article looked like it might have been for the GL1100, would the GL1200 be the same process?

Thanks!

It will be very similar - if you want to be 100% sure, you can download the 1200 service manual and have a look in there.

Yup works the same on all disc brakes.
Go with GS on this one.
He wont lead you the wrong way.
Good Luck.

Leroy,

While you have the pads off, check inside the calipers for crud. As I said, this has been sitting and they were a little grabby when I drove it Wednesday. Cleared up as I got to work so a little exercise is probably a good thing.

Thanks Andy. I will do that today. Great ride, I love it!

I never mentioned to anyone but I got this from Andy. He is a good guy, and has some nice wings!

Remember to blow out any brake dust when you are applying the anti-squeal grease. Brake dust is a main cause of squealing.

The GL12 has little spring things behind the pads. They're supposed to stop the squeal.

From what you've described, thepuck may not going back into the caliper correctly. That may be from a build-up of gunk in the master cylinder. Or crud on the puck itself. Or even dry mounting pins. Look the whole system over very carefully. Chances are it's a little bit of everything listed above.

Well, I did everything as instructed and it worked for a little while. The thing is, the left front pads (the suspected culprits) do not have a puck on the back, it is a smooth back. So, my suspicion is when I cleaned and reassembled it just worked it's way back into a squeak.

The right front caliper had the puck and is fine.
