Alrighty! I am just throwing out my dates:

March 9th thru 17th 2013.

I do not have a plan... but I know this... whatever we do... I am NOT interested in catching pneumonia OR fracturing my femur like I did this past March.

Of course this has traditionally been a Big Bend trip... BUT...

I will kick off the discussion with these two suggestions:

A. East Texas Somewhere?

B. Silver City New Mexico?

What do you think?

I don't think East Texas is high on my priority list after living there for most of my life. That being said.......
there are other destinations also, that are much cooler.

THIS... is exactly the way I feel about the Hill Country.

It's beautiful... but a bit too close to home for me to really relish. On both this forum and the Valk forum... almost every rider in Texas wants to come HERE to ride. They schedule annual events months in advance so close-by that I can ride down roads that I know like the palm of my somewhat hairy hand in 30 minutes or less... and then wonder why I am not staying "at the motel" with the group.

Hello... I'm twenty minutes from home!

Other than Big Bend, I suspect that almost any destination north of the border at Spring Break is going to be MUCH, MUCH "cooler" than east Texas.

As in literally freezing or below.

I will add this... I once took a group pf students to Palo Duro Canyon during spring break. YES... it was cold... but not overtly so. (At least in my mind... which I admit is somewhat twisted!) They have some really cool little cabins there, built back in the depression era by CCC. It turned out to be fun trip. The pictures were fabulous.

Other than that, all I can say is... Silver City... maybe Roswell. (That's a goofy place!)

If we wanted to "ride like hell"... hard and mean interstate miles... maybe southern Arizona... the Superstition Mountain area.

Or... Big Bend! Again!

Now... If you wanted to base from Van Horn... to the Guadalupes... Carlsbad... or maybe El Paso or Las Cruces... that opens up possibilities into southern New Mexico for day trips. The caverns are just there... and the ride out to Dog Canyon through Queen is one I have not made in 20 plus years. But its a 80 mile dead head... one way. There may be gas in Queen these days... I know there is an RV park there now. I'll work on that...

After receiving encouragement from potent members/mods at NASSIR 5, I have bumped this up to re-open discussion.

Red Baron suggested we host the event in Corpus this year... all interested dwell on this and let me know.

Let's ride!

Ditto, as long as the dates are within my time off. I almost made it for a day or two last year. But alas, other priorities came up.

Throw 4 or 5 places in a hat grab one out and go from there.
The worst thing that could happen is we take a wrong turn and get lost.:action:

There are lots of places in Texas to see, things to do, East Texas has the two lane tree covered roads for miles and miles, but the list of things to see, there is not that long...Corpus Christi, has more to see and do, but here again its a toss up. Roswell, yeah once you have seen the UFO museum there and rode out to see the "crash site" its over....Carlsbad ???/...Well here again we have at least one place that just a few miles away is the McKitter (SP) Canyon, walking trail back into the canyon, spring feed river that goes under ground then comes up again a few feet away, nice and cool place to visit...This one tree that grows no where else in Texas, the rainbow trout in some of the streams, the from small to huge lime stone wash out holes, amazing to see....The Cabin build out of the slabs that fell off the clift walls, all materials brought in my truck...Nice house...

Big Bend?? We visited there on an Easter week, it was amazing place..Cool at nights hot durning the day..BTW our first camp site was closed because a momma cougar chased this small deer down, killed it right by these people eating their lunch, then drug it to this ledge to feed her twin cubs...Rangers doped her and her cubs moved them to another place, away from the camp sites...

Where everits decided to go I'm sure that it will be great riding...Yeah I love San Marcus and watching the swimmers in the river....Get sore eyes watching some...:ROFL::ROFL:

Randy...

Where was it we talked about? Las Cruces? That would be do-able for me... might pull in a few of the AZ guys if we can get AZGL1500 to talk it up a bit.

From there we could reach into the Gila... or cruise Roswell... or a variety of places that are likely to be snow free at that time of year.

Of course you'd be loop tour director.

Las Cruces would put us with in reach for day rides for Mayhill,Weed,Mescalero, Cloudcroft, one way. The other Silver City, Cliff, all the way up to datil weather permitting.

Weather turns cold could always take off to the boot heel and ride hwy 9 through Columbus off into AZ. Don't really know much about that down there but ya don't know unless ya go.:action:

I have to tell you guys... I am torn here.

Let me make this perfectly clear. I want to ride... but NASSIR 6 is in Simcoe, Ontario this comming summer... and just between you. me and the fence post that trip would be...

EPIC!

From here to Natchez, MS... cruise the entire Natchez Trace one handed. Hop on I-40 burn it east to NC. Hook up with my Georgia Peeps there and cruise the BRP all the way to Shenandoah. The dive straight for Buffalo, NY and cross over into Canada... eh!

Hey! I am paper carrying Newfie Screecher... eh!

My concern is funding... will I have enough to pull off both.

Otherwise, I have to say that Las Cruces works for me. But when it comes to mileages, I am always thinking of DrifterTex and Saralou. Consider this: I have often (and I DO mean often) made Kerrville on a Friday night leaving from work. If we were to lay over there... GOOGLE says the outgoing mileages the following day are not excessive. We'd be arriving in Las Cruces by mid afternoon. Easily do-able. It's the head start that really counts here. Google say 7hrs and 48minutes to Las Cruces from Kerrville!

Do-able! Friday night: Super 8, Kerrville. Saturday: we are there.

No faster than staging through Del Rio for Big Bend.

It's not about the mileage, it' s all about forecasting discretionary cash in light of a looming Canadian trip.

If I decide to go...

You and drifter decide where to hold it. The reason is that NASSIR 6 will be way out of reach for me because of Bus. unless in the next year I find someone to take care of things while Iam gone. That is something that I have given up on long ago they last about two weeks and waste my time trying to teach them. So about 4 days is all I can come up with at any one time. [Sorry rant]

So what ever works best for you guys is great for me.

I have dwelled upon this dilemma full term and have arrived at the notion that given the current state of things here, I most likely have neither the time nor the funding to pull off the Canada trip. I have things I need/want to get done around here. For me that means my summer time is very valuable. I figure all toll, a trip to Canada would cost me three weeks and all the financial burden that represents. Or... I could landscape, build a privacy fence and install low consumption irrigation at my place.

Hmmmm...

So at this point, I'd have to say, Las Cruces is looking better and better.

The Valkyrie Riders are in Eureka Springs right now, doing slow passes with their women on the pillion, trying to snatch wieners off a string with their mouths. This is not a good time to be promoting a Spring Break ride within that venue. I will have to ease it out there about January!

I would point out that having the Valk riders join in last year was very cool. Having Wizard and Early Bird along was very insightful. As my friend Greg said: "Those guys speak fluent biker!" So we'll just have to see.

Also... Scott... are you listening to all this? Can you make Kerrville on a Friday Night?

I'm booking this into my calendar Mark, watching this thread for sure....

Would really be great to see Steve and his wife (forgot her name, Sue?)

I am definitely interested in a spring break ride.... I have a problem committing not knowing how work will be between now and March. (been a rough year so far) I live in East Texas and there are nice roads, but as Claude said little as far as attractions. As far as destination ... that is what get's us moving... it's the people we meet that keep us coming back. In other words it makes no difference to me. I have no better suggestions than what has been brought up.

John...

My name is William Travis... like the dude that died defending the Alamo... buying time for Sam Houston to get his army together. But I have always been known as just Travis.

Steve's wife's name is Saralou... and she has the most contagious laugh I have ever known. She's just fun to be around!

Panatellos...

Don't sweat it... just relax and see what spring brings you! Come if you can. There will be lots of time to see who's in and who we'll miss between now and March!

I will say this: visualization precedes actualization. You must be able to "SEE" yourself being there... for it to actually happen.

Come on... It'll be a hoot!

Alrighty... click here and take a good look at this place. I mean REALLY take a look at the virtual tours and the images posted by customers:

http://www.americasbestvalueinn.com/bestv.cfm?idp=1385

Or here:

http://www.tripadvisor.com/Hotel_Re...cas_Best_Value_Inn-Las_Cruces_New_Mexico.html

I would consider this a viable option for lodging.

Whaddya think?

Looks like a good place to hang out. Might be willing to take one for the team and do a
scout trip:weightlifter: later after they stop melting the pavement down there.

Maybe give them a heads up that we might be down to see them this spring.
And just maybe might be able to block some rooms for us when we idea of who will be attending. Always nice to be able to get a few dollars off a room with group rate. [just saying] Nice job once again T. :applause:
