The things you find when working on an older bike!

I just received the loaner Carb Synch Gauges from this Forum and want to thank Bagmaster and all that support this wonderful membership benefit. What a true spirit of giving to our little community here. Well done gentlemen and ladies!

Anyway, when I began to set up the gauges on my 81 GL1100i and I found that thanks to the PO the 1,2 and 4 cylinders were completly missing the set screws that go where the gauge fittings go. Only cylinder #3 had the screw in place. This was allowing a huge mismatch in air available to the cylinders.

After spraying in some WD40 to clean them out, I inserted the fittings and warmed up the engine as directed. I found that the carbs were not badly out of synch but did need a bit of tweaking.

I had also been having a serious problem with the engine niot idling down when I let off the throttle and causing shifting problems. I was sure the throttle cables were bad and had ordered new ones. Well guess what? It now idles beautifully at abou 900-1000 rpm purrs like a kitten and idles down very quickly when I let off.

Wow, it's like having a new engine.

Thanks again to all and I will think fondly of this group always for all the help and support I have experienced here on thsi Forum. Thanks Bagger, Thanks Steve, Thanks to ALL!

I found that rather quickly when I synched one and forgot to put the plugs back in.

Believe it or not I believe I'm gonna have to check the sync on mine this week. It idles fine but gas mileage has dropped to 35 miles to the gallon with moderate driving. I'm used to getting close to 46 riding 2-up.

Glad to hear yours has turned out so well.

Bagmaster,

My friend filled his SUV in NC with gas without ethanol and said he got 25% more mpg on his drive back to Florida, my miles per gallon has suffered since the introduction of ethanol, just a thought.

Yeas, ethanol sucks big time. Biggest scam going in the states now, the world for that matter. I have a couple of local Mom and Pop stations here I get regular, non-ethanol gas from but both are closed on Sundays. Same price as ethanol gas.

Wow, I only get 35 mpg on a good day!

I get a big drop in mileage when I burn corn squeezings. It is almost impossible to find straight gas around here anymore. Without alcohol I can get almost 50 mpg if I ride nice and smooth and stay off the throttle. If I am trying to tear up the blacktop, I get mid 30's.
