My opinion is that the belts themselves are very important to change because of age but the tensioners and water pump is optional depending on what you find. If the original tensioners are still smooth and spinning freely then I'd leave them. Same with the pump, if it's not leaking or making any wrong noises I'd leave that too. It's a personal choice but it's not great shakes to change them later in life if they do fail.
A great mechanic once told me "there's no guarantee a new bearing will last longer than an original still in place". I think he has a good point.
I agree. Just replace the belts and take care not to over tighten the tensioners. If you need detailed instructions and pictures for doing the belts, here they are:

thank u for your help ill check it out when i break it down, will be asking more question soon, cold and rainy in louisville i have plenty of time.
is it ok to use the napa belts i called there about 20 bucks
I wouldn't hesitate to use them. NAPAs part # is 250275 and Gates # is T275.
I have 2 Gates T-275 belts on the way from Amazon and they were $16 and change each, with free shipping. I also ordered new spark plugs at $2.60 each since the plugs have to be removed anyway and it's cheap to install new ones.
Amazon is where I got mine also Dan. Good price and they are Gates belts. If you have time to wait a few days for them it is a good place to get them. It has been a couple years since I bought mine but I think it was 3 or 4 business days to get here... pretty good service I thought.
Thanks u guys for all your help, amavon here I come
oops t275 is correct. t274 is the gl1000/1100 belt

May I ask what brand & part number for the plugs you ordered? Next month I'm planning on tearing into my 1500 to replace the belts & might as well do the plugs while it's apart. Thanks in advance....-Rich

They run best on the stock NGK plugs. No need for the extra dollars paying for some companies advertising Hype.
I agree with Newday. The stock NGK's are fine. They are tough as nails. All the platinum and atomic sales and marketing are just hype. I would run the high dollar ones in a race situation maybe, but that's about it. I have seen those NGK's last a decade, and still not leak or crack. JMO. And they are cheap! jimsjinx
