Anyone know the mileage/time interval for a timing belt change on the 1500's?

Thanks.

I advise 8 years or 80,000 miles whichever is first.
Immediately if you don't know for sure.

I'm going to look at a '93 with 82000 miles this weekend. If the belt hasn't been done...

Is it possible to do at home if you have a decent mechanical aptitude?

What should I use as a cost factor?

Any special tools required?

You will probably get lots of opinions about changing timing belts. And they will be just that "opinions". It has been my experience that many times folks don't have any "hard facts or valuable experience" to backup their opinions.

The Honda service manual recommends inspect at 100,000 miles and replace if necessary. Key note, it does not say replace at 100,000 miles, it says inspect. You don't want to know how many miles I have on my bike with the original timing belts and no problems. I have proven "several times over" on a couple of different GL1500's that they last a lot longer than many folks think.

Flame suit on..........but I speak from experience, there is no better teacher. Yep....I have heard all the hype out there for many years about timing belts.

Then again, I have only been riding Gold Wing's for 30 years so I might not know much about them.........!! But I am sure some folks who have only ridden them a few years will tell me everything I need to know.

But if folks sleep better at night when they change them prematurely, go for it...........!!

Same situation on my Toyota Sequoia. Just turned 100k and the timing belt replacement interval is 90k. Went to the biggest most active Tundra/Sequoia forum on the Internet to find out what I needed to have replaced in addition to the timing belt. Found a thread about how long they really last and was astounded to find that lots and lots of folks have 200k or more on the original belt. One guy even had a little over 400k on his. He bought it brand new so there was no doubt that it had never been changed.

My thoughts on this are -

1. Mfg. has to cover it's ass by airing on the side of caution.

2. Timing belt changes are mega profits to the dealers.

Bottom line - They'll go at least 2 to 3 times as long as the recommended replacement interval. To Honda's credit, they don't have any recommendations at all as to when to replace the belts on the GW. They say inspect at 100k. This is a much more honest approach than the one taken by Toyota.

I've heard 100K or 10 years, whichever comes first. That said, I don't mean to derail the topic, but I've been agonizing about whether to change them on my '99 Camry. Did it at 60K because that was the rec then, but just found out the rec now is at 90K. So, I've got 145K and wondering if I should do it at 150K (60K + 90K) or put it off. Way things are looking, I may have the car another 150K! Fritz_The_Cat, did you run across any good Camry forums in your searches?

To get back on topic, a bike mechanic once told me he'd only seen belts in 2 conditions: 'look good' and 'broken' - and you don't want to see them broken!

That's the problem with timing belts and interference engines (which I assume the GW is). Snap the belt, ruin the motor.

My VFR had gear drive...no replacement at all!

If you want to save a couple of bucks buying Chinese or Taiwanese unknown belts from a non-supporting seller, and risk ruining a motor, go ahead.

Go to NAPA and buy Gates brand belts from them instead. Cheap insurance.

Well around here napa has no belts. not even in the hub. Oriely does not supply them. when checking at auto zone they did not have any don't think they could order them. found a shop here that has some for $50 each but that is $70 difference. In my situation could mean differnce in food for the week for the family. Money is another reason that I am looking into single carb conversion. I have parts ordered and it would cost me about $60 to setup and rebuild a single carb setup compaired to $400 to have someone rebuild and sync the carb.Just trying to be wise with what God gives me.

I owned a 92 Camry. The timing belt broke on me twice. But since it had a non interference engine, it wasn't that big a deal. The first time was at 42k and the second, just over 90k. I think there was some kind of flaw that was never corrected.

NAPA may not have them in stock, but they can sure order them. Ask them to order quantity 2 of 250275. Same as a Gates T274 belt. O'Reilly Auto Parts carries them, you store may not stock them, but they can get them under Gates T274.

RockAuto has them for $16 each, and you know you're getting quality, unlike the other supplier.

It's cheap insurance for $60 bucks and 2 hours of work to ride with confidence for another 80K miles...they are great until they break...at the least, leave you stranded or worse, a trashed engine...for someone to say you don't need to replace them or it's some kind of conspiracy to make more money, is silly....when do you replace your alternator belts and why?...same material, just alot more at stake...change the belts...it's not that hard....

thanks for the info. Wish I had that link for rock auto.com. I already got a couple belts and would have gotten them from that link. I got in parts for my single carb setup so will have to play with that too

One question I do have is what type of car would the T274 match?

About 99.44% sure the GL1000 and GL1100 (same belt) has no automotive application equivalent. The GL1200 belt crosses over to several Toyota applications, that's why it's so much cheaper, since they make so many more of them.
