It probably won't be exact, if they are within 1/2 tooth don't worry about it.

if they were lined up once, they will line up again. Go back out and try it again. Since you have taken a break, they should line up with no problems.

You must hold the right cam gear in the proper position as you fit the new belt. It has valve spring pressure trying to move from the mark. Check the Reference and FAQ forum on this site for a belt changing tutorial with photos. You can do it.

There was a trick used before. You get the wrench that fits on the center bolt on the cam pulley and zip tie it to the frame that way you can work freely without wrestling with the cam.
The left one should line up easily , it is the right one that wanst o turn out of place due to spring pressure

Hi I had problems with that recently and I put a long brakerbar with a socket on the crank nut and centered the TI mark. Then I vise gripped the bar to the frame so it stayed on T1..
Pull the bottomside of the belt taught opposite of the tension pulleys and turn the cogged gear that little bit the valve spring moves it to the mark and slip on the belt with one hand and hold. and then while holding have the tension pulley bolts slightly loose and tighten with a wrench with the other hand so the belt doesn't slip back a tooth. make sure you started as per manual first It worked well for me to have the T1 mark held while I did the rest.

I just changed the belts on my wife's gl1500 trike and when I took them off, NEITHER cam shaft moved. It was a cinch to put the new ones back on, adjust the tensioner, and VROOM-VROOM-VROOM !

I just did the belts on my 1200 for the first time. Read everything I could find on the forum. Neat trick to hold right side cam was just a threaded bolt with a large fender washer than was bent over holding cam wheel in place. It worked sweet. Now its in my toolbox as the secret weapon.

Ilocked my T1 ratchet/socket down with a large tiestrap, and then tackled the belt, camgear side. I had to just slightly pass the gear mark tooth off the other way. At that point I was able to get everything to line up. It worked for me!:action:

I had the same experience a couple of months ago with my 1500! Was really a snap and not the pita that I was expecting.
