I screwed up bigtime, I had a shop put new timing belts on mygl1100 at the same time I had a new clutch put in, 2 yrs ago. Money was tight but I didnt know how old the belts were, after they put on the new belts there was a whine at certain rpm. I complained and they swore that the belt would breakin in a few hundred miles, if not I could come back and they would make it right.

Of course it didnt get better, went back and they were outta business. Last week the idler started making ugly sounds on the way home from work and I cant afford to have a shop fix it so I have got it mostly apart and wow, this is a major job. Bikebandit.com wants 288 dollars for 2belts and two idlers, is there anywhere cheaper that any of ya could recoomend? I just had my truck totalled and I also have some other things I have to fix on the old girl. Any advice would sure be great, ride safe, bigdaddy

Another clear example of why people should do their own maintenance work on these.
The shop got the belts too tight and knew it. Then they blew you off with a lie and then disappeared.

Their work could have also contributed to the lost tensioner bearing.

The only good part of this story is that they went out of business.

I agree with rudy on this.
I do my own maint. whenever possible.
Dont trust the repair shops.
Most dont care how its done just so they can push one out the door and get paid.
most mechanics get paid a comm. so they work fast.

And none of them like to eat having to re-work something they botched.

Bad incentives all around there.
