Timing belts

Replaced timing belts and tensioners on a 2000 gl 1500. I used gates t275 belts. The only problem is that the right cam sprocket marker was off less than half a sprocket. The motor was spun around with a socket on the crankshaft. There was no interference at all.
So I buttoned it back up and let it idle for 15 minutes. It was quiet as as a church mouse. Rode it a few miles before the whine from the belts and tensioners became noticeably louder. The bike ran fine but the exhaust sounded different after the install. The rpm fluctuate 200 rpms Could it be out of time?

1/2 tooth off is common. It could have been 1/2 tooth off the other way before, did you notice before removing the belts? You probably have them too tight if they whine.
Thanks for reply.
I didn’t look at the right cam before I removed the belts. If it was half tooth off in the opposite direction before
would that mean it’s a hole tooth off now. Will 1 tooth off trash the engine?
Thank you Dave for any advice you have.

I guess you could look at it like that. Hondas usually want to be like to have the cam timing a little retarded so you would want the mark on the pulley clockwise from the mark on the cover. No, it will not trash the engine. If it could it would have already happened the first time you pushed the start button.

Thank you so much for your answers. They have been very helpful. So now I know I should opening it back up and check the tension on the belts and the timing marks. Better safe than sorry

When off by a half tooth always go advanced on timing.

Which way would go to advance the timing, clock-wise or counter clock-wise?
Advance is CCW on 1500s
