Timing Marks on 1984 GL1200

I am working on a friend's 1984 GL1200 and was wondering; therec are two marks on the cam gears. One is a small square dot and about 2 teeth away is a line on each gear. I know that the bike will run as much as two teeth off but more than that and the piston will hit a valve. But I was wondering which marks are the optimum ones to use to time to T1?

Thanks Mark! That is what I used but wanted to make sure! Now I can set the tension and button this baby up!
