I have used the ropey string things and glue with good success. That is what I carry in my saddlebags now. In my younger days, on cruiser bikes, I have used them and then worn the tire out. Now that I'm older and don't heal as fast, I would use them only until I could break the tire down and patch it from inside. They are cheap and readily available at most auto parts stores.
