Tire Wear

Can someone explain why the Dunlop 491 Elite II rear tire on my 1984 GL1200A is cupping? It does not have many miles on it as evidenced by the remaining tread. I always check the pressure before each ride - whether solo or double - to make sure recommended pressure is met.

Keener, the tyre might be older than you think (unless you actually know for sure). Those Elites last for many miles, the previous owner of my 1200 had 19000 miles on the 491s and there was loads of thread left, but the sides were starting to cup so they were the first things to go when I got the bike. I personally didn't think they gave good wet grip (probably why they last so long) so it's Metzlers for me in future.

That's exactly where the cupping is showing - on the sides - with good center tread remaining. As for the age, my guess would bethree years or better as the previous owner didn't do many per year.Anyway, we're just about done riding for the year here so I'm going to have about fiveor six months to save up for a new set. No more Dunlops, though - too spooky in the wet. From comments posted on this site, I think I'll check in to some Metzlers or Bridgestones.
