If your tire is 5 or 6 years old, I would change it anyway. If yours has spokes, it has a tube in it for sure. Some of the mag wheels could use either depending on the bead. It says on the side of the tire if it is tubeless or not.

What Mr. Yanney said.. My bike was handed down, tires were old, but i was short on cash so I did not replace right away.
The front tire blew on the interstate going through Norman, Ok, 3 lanes.. It was scary,, in the future I will not take this type of chance again.. It could have been real bad. I got some Shinko's from Motorcycle Superstore and some heavy duty tubes. I love how she handles now!

I ran over a nail on my GL1100 a couple of years ago as I was heading along the canal on the way to work. Very scary....I leaned into a right hand turn and the bike kept sliding to the left until I was in the oncoming traffic lane.

I blew my front a year ago. It did not lose air but puffed out the size of a baseball. The tire was8 years old with lots of tread left (I couldn't do any riding for a couple years) so the age of a tire can be as bad or worse than tread depth. I could not see any visible age cracks so the bottom line is - don't take a chance! My rear tire was only a year newer and looked like new but I replaced it at the same time. Besides, you can get 20,000 + miles on good tires. Paul
