Well it finally happened. On US2 with a heavily loaded Time Out trailer. Double loaded (The Hag and I returning from N4). About 100 lbs of gear strapped on top of the trailer giving it a gross weight of over 500 lbs. Suddenly it felt like something was wrong with the engine and I was losing power. I twisted the throttle but continued to decelerate. We were not climbing a hill so my first thought was - there's an engine problem. Then I felt a vibration, not a shake or a twisting, just the sort of feeling you get when you hit the rumble strips they put alongside the highway to keep you from drifting off the road. Looked in the mirror and saw the trailer vibrating and canting slightly down on one side. Pulled her over and stopped immediately and, although the tire was long gone, the rim was unharmed and worthy of a new tire.

All that to say this : there was never any danger of loss of control. The trailer continued to follow like a puppy dog, even with a blown tire. It never fishtailed or anything. Hopefully this will comfort those who are considering pulling a trailer but are worried about what bad things might happen. So that's the good news.

Bad news is, a new tire cost me $35.00!

Glad to hear everything worked out.

The weight actually probably kept it from swaying.

$35.00 for a tire isn't so bad.

Got any pictures of your trip?

I had a blowout on a trailer tire in Colorado in 06. It was loaded pretty heavily and I had no problem at all getting safely off the highway. Had to ride about 60 miles into Denver to find a tire for it though. I have a spare for the trailer now.

Hey Joe, glad it is mostly a good story! $35 sounds pretty good to me for anything motorcycle related! My guess is you were pretty happy with that too. :) You guys be safe and enjoy the rest of your trip!

You were just lucky. Anything could have happened, this time your luck was in and you got away lightly at $35.

Yes I keep a spare under the trailer so we had a couple of laughs while The Hag photographed me changing the tire. Kinda "rounded-out" the trip, so to speak.
