Trailer Wiring Question, GL1800

2683 Views 14 Replies 5 Participants Last post by  jackjohn
I just bought a trailer for my 2012 GL. I also purchased the Kury Plug and Play with relay and installed it today. The trailer is brand new and came without a plug and the Kury harness came without a plug also. What I need to know is what plug setup I need to complete the job. I do plan on running power to the trailer, that is the nice thing about the Kury harness, it allows for power right from the battery to be routed to the trailer. Any help or ideas would be appreciated.

Does your new trailer have turn signals independent of the brake lights? (like you bike) If so, you will need a five pin connector of some type (round, flat, square) If your trailer turn signals share the same lights as the brakes, it is set up for a four pin connector. If this is the case, you have to make a choice, either add independent turn signal lights to the trailer or get a five to four converter for your bike. It will work either way and one way is not necessarily harder or more expensive than the other, just a choice.
As Jack said we need more information.
How many wires does your Kury Plug and Play have were the plug would attach and how many wires does your trailer have where the plug would attach?
When I got my used trailer, I rewired the whole thing, and replaced all the lights with new enclosures with LED's, Got a 6 pin trailer harness set, turn and tail are separate and I don't need a converter. Needed to get my electrical load down and the LED's solved that problem, and now don't have to worry about bulbs burning out either.
The 6 pin connector will give you a small power lead to the trailer if you want.

The Kury plug and play will work with 5 or 4 wires. The trailer has 10 wires, no kidding. 3 black, 1 brown, 2 red, 2 blue and 2 green.

I hope it came with a wiring diagram. If the trailer has separate turn signals, you should have one wire for the tail lights and any marker lights it may have; one wire for the brake lights; two wires (one for each side) for the turn signals and one wire for the ground. What brand of trailer did you get?

I have emailed the dealer and asked for a wiring diagram.
It sounds like they ran every wire to the plug area individually.

As Jack said, I hope you have or can get a wiring diagram for the trailer or you're in for a lot of tracing/testing to see what's what.

Yup, good thing I have a Fluke meter and know how to use it. ;) This is going to remind me of my days working the A-10 on the flightline.
Good looking trailer. I have the aluminum trailer that they sell and have been very happy with it.
Below is what I received from the dealer. Not necessarily a wiring diagram but it is something I can work with. I would like for those with more knowledge than myself about GW's and motorcycles in general, that is about everyone on this site:), if anything about the color coding on motorcycles mentioned is not factual? The statement about red or blue is always the brake wire and you will not have both a blue and red on a motorcycle seems to a an absolute, and having taking research methods in college, I am skeptical about absolutes.

Anyway, here it is;
Wiring for Escalade
Tie all 3 black wires together, these are all ground wires. On the bike, ground is either black or white.

The single brown is the interior light and it is tied in with the running lights, which are the two blue wires. So both blue wires and the single brown wire all tie together from the trailer and will route to the brown on the bike.

There are 2 red wires. One is right turn and one is left turn. You have to determine which is left and which is right, the left red routes into the yellow on the bike. The right red routes into the green on the bike.

Yellow wires are for the brake lights. Tie the yellow wires together and route them to either the blue or red on the bike, red or blue is always brake on a bike. You will not have both red and blue on a bike.

I would buy a five flat plug for the trailer and the wing. I do not like the round plugs. Just wire it like they say, and it should work fine, as long as you have the turn signals connected correctly. Make sure your ground to the bike is a good one.
This may help, these are the wire colors according to the wiring diagram for the 2012 GL1800.

Running lights are Brown with a White tracer, The solid Brown wire goes to the license plate lamp. (This will work also)

JackJohn, I have no doubt you speak the truth. However, the Kury plug and play wiring harness/with relay that I installed changes the wiring to;
Right Turn Green
Left Turn Yellow
Running Lights Brown
Brake Blue
Ground White

When I posted the info about the trailer color coding earlier, I didn't have the Kury instructions for the wiring harness with me to compare what the trailer dealer gave me. Lucky for me they match exactly what the dealer indicated to do for the trailer plug.
I forgot about the interface, glad it works.
