I have a 2002 1800 that started to jump very slightly at highway speed. I wasn't sure what was happening but a few more thousand miles and problem started to become worse. Halfway from OH to CO tranny would not stay in fifth under a load. I changed to Castrol semi synthetic 1k before the problem started. Now I went to Rotella T full synthetic. I dont know If the oil is an issue or not. Any ideas?

:waving:Welcome and Hello Dan . This should not be a problem caused by oils . Its likely a shift fork issue , unless you have "heel/toe " shifter . In that case it might be an adjustment problem or limited travel cause by some interference of the linkage.

Hey man, welcome to the forum. Her is a 14+ page forum on the info you need.
http://gl1800riders.com/forums/showthread.php?t=190054

I can tell you one thing, it is a bent shifter fork!!! It is only repairable by splitting the case ( taking the motor completely apart) and it will cost you approx $3,000-3500
dollars depending on your demographic area. ( I am in Tennessee). My 02 1800 did the same thing and thats what it was, along with over 100 other people on the link i sent you and Honda will not recognize it as being a problem. All we can do is file a complaint with the NHSTA. Good Luck and God Bless. It is a hassle so you will need it!!!

I hate to be the bringer of bad news, but it could BE bad news. It seems that the kick out of 5th is caused by worn drive dogs on the gears. When the gear kicks back it can bend the fork. When the fork is bent, it can no longer fully engage the dogs, and the problem gets worse and worse as the dogs wear away, and or the fork is holding the shift gear in the wrong position. Seems to be kinda like the chicken and the egg thing. No one seems to be positive about which happens first. Sometimes it it also a problem in the lower gears. This malfuntion seems to be showing up more and more and more. There are EXTENSIVE discussions on this problem on all the Wing boards. Sorry, but occasionally for some unknown reason it will go away for awhile. It is not related to oil or a heal and toe shifter. Once the shift "barrell" is activated, it should continue the shift by itself. Some have noticed that going into 5th gear sometimes feels wierd, as tho' it's "finishing" the shift before you take your foot off the shifter. (well..toe) Some have claimed that Honda is refusing to fix the trannys if the bike shows signs of having a trailer hitch installed. Dont know about that. It's an extensive and expensive repair as the engine has to come out and be split open. Check around the boards and you will find out more than you want to know.....good luck.

Welcome to the board.....lots of good stuff and folks here.........
