Assuming the character-wheels are driven by gear teeth, then sounds like it skipped-a tooth.
In which case, I bet you could manually move the wheels "back" that half-increment, to re-index them.
I've done similar with the odometer (in whole increments), on both the 1500 and a ford truck*
*Done because I replaced the speedo, and wanted new ones to match same value on old ones.
