trying to decide if my head gasket is bad

Sometimes when I start it, about 30 seconds after I fire it up, I get a very small amount of white smoke from the right pipe. It lasts a few minutes and always goes away. It does it maybe 25 percent of the time that I start it. All the plugs look the same. Nothing abnormal there. When cold I pulled the radiator cap and started it and no bubbles in the radiator but when it warmed up like when the t-stat opened it began kind or spurting up and down and spewing antifreeze out. It has not lost any noticeable amount of coolant but I have only driven it a few hundred miles since the water pump was done. I have only put maybe 500 on it since I got it. Anything else to check or consider? or am I just being paranoid? Any and all suggestions welcome

thanks

It may only be condensation, just keep an eye on the coolant level and watch for oily spots in the reservoir.

thanks dave. so your suggestion is just ride it? I know I can worry too much sometimes. Maybe I just need a nudge saying "Quit worrying about every little thing and enjoy it!"

It's OK to worry Park, but lets direct toward something else, like, is there enough beer in the fridge, and is there enough meat in the freezer. How white is the smoke? I've got an '82 and the day it doesn't smoke a little I'm gonna think I'm out of some kind of fluid. Just ride it.

If you wait about 30 seconds after shut down before lying it over on the side stand that will help minimize it.

Beer in the fridge is always a priority. Never low to my place. Meat in the freezer will run out before the beer! The smoke is just barely white enough to say it is white. but noticeably more than the other pipe. And again, not always. I just went out twice tonight and started it and warmed it up twice and couldn't see any at all! Oh, and what pressure cap should it have? it is a standard automotive size cap and earlier I was having coolant leak issues so I bought and used a 4 lb cap to help with the leaking. And it did help a lot, But I have since re-done the transmission cover and taken care of the leaks. I bought a 13 lb now, they are only about 4 bucks so just let me know if I need a different one.

thanks

13 lb cap is fine and nothing special about the cap... common automotive type.. as said before, until you have one or more significant symptoms (examples:more smoke, sweet smells, green liquids appearing, coolant in oil, oil in coolant, losing coolant, bubbles up through coolant bottle, steam cleaned plugs, over heating, etc.).. keep riding... [and don't expect to have them all.. just a coupleare significant..]

The higher pressure cap raises the boiling point of water about 20°, might aggravate a weak radiator and gaskets. I run a 4lb cap because it runs 180°- 200° in our summer heat.

ok, definitely a head gasket. It is kinda bumming me out this bike, but I will fix it and move ahead!

I would run the 4 pound cap, unless its a Stock car, ifit takes a 13# cap to keep it from boiling over you have other problems. 20 years in the radiator business tells me so.

That being said my 86 1200 Interstate smokes a little at start up for about 45 seconds on the first start of the day..
