Tyre tread depth

I was just wondering what the legal limits are where come from on the tyre tread depth.
When I took my wing in for MOT I thought it may fail on the front tyre. The minimum depth used to be 1mm over 3/4 of the tyre tread. The law has now changed on motorcycle tyres and now states that there must be vissible tread across 3/4 of the tread. This means that you can have almost slick tyres and still be legal!!!!!

So the center can be bald as long as the other 75% is there?

Different bike, but just for reference purposes:

I posted this thread to ST.N, and when I did, I wondered if the tire was good enough to make it one way to New Mexico (where I'd replace it on arrival).

As it turns out - after a 100-mile jaunt, just after snapping the photo, it was down to the steel belt.

So here's a shot of a tire that SHOULD be replaced.

incorrect

For a moped the tyre tread is vissible tread (what vissible is up to the mot tester)

For anything over 50cc then it 1.mm (could pass at one station and fail at another)

law states 1 mm

All above is over 3/4 of the tyre tread.

I change my tyres well before the 1.6mm. .

Get the mot tester manual for motorcycle ( can get it from wh smith or your local vosa) wont cost a lot

Looks like my MOT tester may have given me bad info.

No one has ever had to tell me it's time to change a motorcycle tire. Some shops have even asked if I wanted to keep the old ones.

If I'm on 2 tires, they both better be in excellent condition!! :action:

I can always be cheap in some other way ... like the old truck.
