Considering renting a 6x12 enclosed Uhaul (their biggest trailer) to move the two wings back to California ('83 Interstate and 2000 SE)... seems like it should fit.. one forward and slightly angled.. the other beside/behind it.. backing the back one in..

Has anyone actually done it with this setup?? Is there anything else better short of buying something? Anyone used an open car carrier for two bikes (like two rails)???

Thanks.. jim

Have you checked the insides of one of them for floor based tie down points? I've used their trucks but never their trailers.

Their box trailers don't have the tie downs in the right place Jim. That's from memory several years ago.

An open car trailer would be better. Lots of solid rails on that and usually loops to tie off to.

maybe you could find a dual rail m/c trailer on craigslist? The rental rates for U-haul are through the roof.

I looked at going to Fort Wayne, IN and renting a trailer to pull my wife's car back from up there. Plus her dad and his things.

Sticker shock, one-way and round trip (too many days).

I bought a tow dolly off of craigslist and towed it up, and the car back on it. Then I sold the tow dolly. The only thing that went wrong, was I had to put a set of tires on the tow dolly, so it almost washed out the savings :X

But, look around, see what you can do in that arena. Buy/sell is often a cheaper way.

Ummmm, why do you want to go back to California? Way more expensive out there than where you are.

(1) Not worried about tie down points.. I have a complete custom setup that I made for the 6x12 the last time I rented one to bring the SE back from Oklahoma.. so I could use this and make more.. was curious about the room.. enclosed an locked seems more secure..

(2) I was thinking the same.. might be the way to go.. about $370 to rent it though

(3) I'll do some looking.. we have a c.r.a.p.p.y craigslist even including Indianapolis.. not much available.. and besides, this is Harley country so trailers are in big demand.. not many available:cheeky1::cheeky1: (couldn't resist that.. )

(4) lets see... I hate snow and cold.. job is being transferred back to Pasadena in February.. I hate snow and cold... all my kids are in southern california.. I hate snow and cold...and all the grandkids are in southern california... I hate snow and cold... My wife's parents just moved to Los Angeles.. I hate snow and cold.. and did I mention.. I hate snow and cold...

MIght add that the new job is for a client in Phoenix so I'll be spending much time there.. probably weeks at a time... so there will probably be an opportunity to get out Mesa way.. I'll probably keep a bike in Phoenix until the contract is complete.. I am being optomistic here.. as the contract is not even signed.. due to close the deal this month.. then startup in February..

Hooray for everything working out to your benefit.

I know a guy in Phoenix who just might be able to store a bike in his garage, matter of fact, I think he has one stored there now for some unimportant dude from Denmark :D
by the name of Henning, who just happened to meet up with us guys in Montrose, CO.

ignore the oil, it's a Diesel bike :action: :waving:

See, it even says it is CO2 Neutral !!!

I was chatting with the guys at the truck rental place, they said renting a truck from the northeast to go south or west was getting really expensive, but renting one to come this way was really cheap because of the demand. They need more trucks up this way because everyone is moving out. Trailers are probably the same deal.

I saw that bike in your NASSIR pictures... must clatter like crazy.. I would like to see it in person... will he let you start it?

When things actually get settled in.. I'll make it a point to meet up with you.. both bikes are still here in Indiana, but I need to get them west somehow.. and being registered in CA, I pay insurance year-round (guys here in IN don't)...

Wasn't there a post from someone here offering to transport Wings? Someone Willing to ride them from point A to point B in exchange for travel expenses?

I'd be willing to do it. But I'd need a couple of weeks to get some things sorted first.

You might want to talk to Lopeha too, he's a long haul trucker...he goes all over the place. It might be possible to arrange for him to pick them up on a run, and drop them off on another one. Timing on that might be a little hard to sort out though, just a thought.

Your probably going to want a 12 by 7' wide trailer. That's what I have and its a snug fit at that. At 6' wide you will have to slide the forward bikes rear over. That is if it's an enclosed. Mirrors wil become a problem with the 6' also. Tony:waving:

I have a 5'x8' Wells Cargo Trailer - I can get two bikes in, one nose forward, the second nose backwards. I had to install my own tie-down rings by drilling mounting holes through the floor and bolting them in place. I also placed some rings along the wall (into the framing stud), not so much for tie down as for stabilizing other loads. I have 2x4 "rails" along the floor to guide the bikes; when I'm hauling "other things", I lay a couple of plywood sheets over the "joists".

The problem with the U-Haul trailers is they don't have the tie downs, but if you have a setup, it shouldn't be an issue.

I know U-Haul is REALLY expensive heading westbound - the quote for a open flat trailer was over $250 just from Ohio to Missouri. When the chance arose to purchase the trailer for a good price, I seized the opportunity, in part due to the high cost of rentals.

I don't know what the quotes are headed east for a box, but hope they're cheaper for you...

I have use a 6x12 trailer to haul two wings in and it was a tight fit, but it worked. I wish I still had the trailer, but it was too tall to fit in my garage.

Hi I was just reading your posts on fitting2 goldwings in a 6 x 12 trailer. I have a 1800 wing and my wife has a Shadow Ace Tourer (hard bagger with forward engine guard/foot pegs 36 inches wide ). How did you get them to fit? Please advise.

There's always the fun way, haul the '83 and store the '00. Fly backfor it and ride home in style. When I moved from WA to OR I rented a U-haul 26' truck and a 5x9' utility trailer that has a ramp. There was no way I could haul two 'Wingson the trailer so I ended up hauling my 1500 on the trailer and the two 1100s in the truck with the household goods.

Looks to me that the 6x12 utility trailer would take both bikes okay. You could mark out 6'x12' or a bit less on (the measurements on trailers are outside ones I think) the ground to see how they'd fit. It might be worth taking the bags off the '83 for more room, you'll have about 3' overlap on the two bikes. I believe the center of gravity on the pair of bikes facing in opposite directions with the 1500 facing forward would be okay for the trailer's tongue weight.

The advantage of the utility is more tie downs and you can easily check how they're doing. if things loosen up in a closed trailer it's going to be a lot harder to get them retied when both are in the box. I used ratchet straps to tie the bike down which worked very well. I like them because when you stop you can check each tie down for looseness (and there will be some) and snug them up again easily and quickly. A little rain and dirt won't hurt them, you aren't going to have them on the road any longer than they'd be if you rode them anyway. If it 'twere me I'd go with the U-haul trailer, bite the bullet on the cost.
