I have a 5'x8' Wells Cargo Trailer - I can get two bikes in, one nose forward, the second nose backwards. I had to install my own tie-down rings by drilling mounting holes through the floor and bolting them in place. I also placed some rings along the wall (into the framing stud), not so much for tie down as for stabilizing other loads. I have 2x4 "rails" along the floor to guide the bikes; when I'm hauling "other things", I lay a couple of plywood sheets over the "joists".
The problem with the U-Haul trailers is they don't have the tie downs, but if you have a setup, it shouldn't be an issue.
I know U-Haul is REALLY expensive heading westbound - the quote for a open flat trailer was over $250 just from Ohio to Missouri. When the chance arose to purchase the trailer for a good price, I seized the opportunity, in part due to the high cost of rentals.
I don't know what the quotes are headed east for a box, but hope they're cheaper for you...
