I too thought it was preferable to have the wheel in place before tightening the drive-line joint. Something about the alignment of the shaft.
Actually it is to ensure the alignment of the rear axle . When tightening the rear end drive first it could be difficult to get the axle through .

Years ago when the drive train on my `91 1500 showed the same wear you have. I bought the take off parts from a trike conversion for $70.00 with 7,000 miles at time of conversion.
